Interview and CV Preparation for Chef Jobs

Preparing for Interviews for Chef Jobs

When applying for chef jobs and interviews the chef in question. just like any other job seeker needs to full prepare themselves. Whilst not wishing to be patronising it is amazing how many times I hear from clients that applicants have not shown for an agreed interview, where not as prepared as they thought they might be or did not impress as much as they could have done.

Granted it is a skill to continually present well at interview but it is a skill with the understanding and adoption of the basic guidelines that can be learned.

CV Preparation

Firstly prepare a quality CV. There is no definite template to follow but there are simple guidelines;
  • Ensure it is clear, simple, interesting to read and grammatically correct and that each section is clearly titled.
  • Start with your name and contact details, including home and mobile telephone numbers and email address.
  • Include a short profile outlining your major skills, and employment aspirations.
  • Qualifications. Employers are more interested in your associated professional qualifications so ensure you list these first.
  • Employment. List your chef jobs in chronological order. Include places of work, dates, positions, main duties and key achievements.
  • Also include your main interests as employers like to know what makes you tick as an individual.
  • End with the referees that can be contacted should you be offered those chef jobs.
  • As a guide I would try and ensure all information is filled on to a two page document or three at the very most so as being not too long for an employer to read.
Interview Preparation
  •  When interviews are arranged for your chosen chef jobs ensure you know where you are going and how to get there. If possible try a dry run before your interview so you know how long it takes. You can also now google a route planner which will show you the easiest route and time taken by either car and or public transport.
  • If another commitment materialises once your interview is arranged which means you are unable to attend then call the employer and or agency. Another date can easily be arranged. Likewise if you decide this chef job is not for you call and let the employer and or agency and be honest.  Don't just not show! You never know who you may meet at another interview!
  • Prepare and plan your interview. Find out about your potential new employer. Google their business and find out them, who owns them, what they do and their menus etc. Think of the questions that may be asked about your previous experiences and your best replies. Also think about your key achievements and the skills you will be able to bring to this new position.
  • Dress appropriately. Whilst you are not usually dressed in a suit or dressed smartly at work as you'll be in your chef whites remember this is an interview so dress to impress.
  • Meet and Greet. Ensure you arrive early. If for what ever reason you may be late call ahead and advise your interviewer so they are not stood waiting for you. When you arrive be polite. Introduce yourself with a firm handshake, smile and maintain eye sight.
  • Actual interview. Be aware of your verbal and non verbal behaviour. Be attentive, answer all questions to the point and as fully as possible and maintain a smile and your eyesight on your interviewer. Remember an interview is a two way process and you have to ensure you have all the information you need to know this is the position for you so ask all questions you have.
  • Interview parting. Ensure you end well. Thank your interviewer and end with another firm handshake ensuring your smile and eyesight are still maintained on the interviewer.
As stated earlier performing well at interview is a skill but one that can be learned and practised on a friend, partner or family member. Good luck i hope these guidelines help you in the pursuit of your next chef jobs.
